Confidence, Compassion, and Chaos: The Truth About Nursing School
December 10, 2025
This week, Dr. Lisa Beasley talks with three nursing students from UTHSC who open up about why they chose nursing, what their days really look like, and the moments that changed how they see patient care. From accelerated vs. traditional tracks to clinical surprises, emotional resilience, and the skills that humbled them — this conversation is honest, encouraging, and full of heart.
In this episode, Lisa Beasley sits down with three nursing students from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s College of Nursing: Alyssa Palermini, Carolyn Castillo, and Mary Crow. Two are nearing graduation from the accelerated BSN program, while one is building her path through the traditional BSN track.

Together, they share what sparked their passion for nursing, how their previous careers shaped their decisions, and what a “typical” week in nursing school really looks like. They open up about surprises they’ve faced, the emotional resilience the program demands, and the coursework that changed the way they think at the bedside. From mental health insights to the humbling reality of IVs and assessments, this conversation gives an honest and encouraging look at the journey to becoming a nurse.

Whether you’re in healthcare or just curious about the process, this episode offers heart, humor, and hard-earned wisdom.
