The Badge of Success: When Pride Becomes Identity with Myra Hall

Hitting every target can hide a problem that doesn't look like one. In episode 275, the panel digs into the moment success stops being something you have and becomes something you need. They cover validation hunger, delegation that turns into micromanagement and what happens when the title disappears overnight. Pride in your work is great. Pinning your worth to it is a bet you'll eventually lose.
 

Wearing the Badge or Being Worn by It? 


Some leadership problems look exactly like winning. Every KPI hit. The promotion landed. A team that runs like clockwork and a phone that never stops ringing because everybody needs you. 

Nice work. Now answer this: what's left of you if all of it vanishes by Friday? 

For episode 275, the No More Leadership BS panel takes on the side of success nobody warns you about. It's the slow slide where pride in the role turns into needing the role, and the title you earned starts quietly deciding who you are. 

Reading Your Own Press 
The warning signs don't show up on a performance review. They show up as a growing appetite for validation. You start needing people to tell you you're a good leader, and one compliment only holds you until lunch. 

The panel names a few more symptoms. Leaders who believe their way is the only way. Leaders who feel oddly threatened by the idea of being replaced. And leaders who stop being curious, because once you think you've figured it all out, every new idea feels like an attack on what you already know. 

One host put it plainly: the day you stop asking how to do it better is the day you should probably retire. 

Delegation With the Servant Removed 
When the badge becomes your identity, delegation turns into dictation. "Here's the task, here's the deadline" becomes "here's the task, the deadline and exactly how you'll do it." 

Why? Because letting someone else find a better way threatens the badge. The panel calls it servant leadership without the servant. You're still serving something. It just happens to be your own ego. 

There's a quieter version too. The leader who feels responsible for everything and decides that means touching everything. Burnout follows, people stop growing and you end up alone behind the badge making worse decisions than you would with a few trusted voices in the room. 

When the Badge Hits the Floor 
Layoffs. A reorg. A business that doesn't make it. A pandemic that wipes out the work you built a career on. The panel shares stories of being the CEO one day and not the CEO the next, and what that does to a person who'd tied their worth to the title. 

Here's the hopeful bit: purpose is transferable. Most people just don't know how to move it. Sometimes losing the badge is the only thing that makes you go looking for what actually matters. 

The Bottom Line 
Be proud of what you've built. Pride is healthy. The trouble starts when the role stops carrying your accomplishments and starts carrying your worth, because it was never built to hold that weight. And if you're already buried in it, you won't think your way out alone. Get someone outside the bottle to read the label.
